Book Reviews & Clubs

Book Reviews - 2nd Wednesday at 10 a.m.
October through April

The Friends of the Library invite you to attend Book Review sessions on the second Wednesday of the month, October through April at 10 a.m.  Our distinguished guest reviewers will review a variety of books and at the end of the program, two copies of the reviewed book will be raffled.  Reading the book prior to the review is not necessary but welcomed.  Light refreshments are provided.  If you have any questions, please contact the Library at 863 291-5880..  Click here for book list/schedule.

Tuesday Book Club - 3rd Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The Club meets on the third Tuesday of every month (unless otherwise noted – denoted by *) at
4 p.m.

Online Book Clubs

Join our Online Book Clubs. Every day, Monday through Friday, you will receive in your email a five-minute selection from a chapter of a book. By the end of the week, you’ll have read 2-3 chapters. Every Monday we start a new book. Click here for more information.

Computer Classes Classes are free and range from one to two hours long.  Registration required. Class size and computers are limited.  Personal laptops are welcome provided they have the appropriate software installed. There will be no classes from June through September 2009.

Enrichment Movie Series.  On the first Tuesday of each month, join us at for our exciting new movie series that offers a diverse mix of documentaries, foreign films and feature films.  This movie series is intended for a mature audience with movie ratings from PG to R.  Minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.  All shows begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Library’s movie theater. Excellence in Reading is a very successful program at the library. Children read specific books and are tested on a computer. There are a set number of books to read and incentives awarded along the way. Excellence in Reading titles: BEGINNING, INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED
 
Mailing List. The PolkLib mailing lists allows patrons to receive emails from the library about upcoming events and provides a forum to discuss current issues with library staff. Click here to subscribe.

Poetry Live! Formerly “Poetry Live!”, poetry on the patio is a casual evening of poetry readings that takes place on the beautiful patio outside of Richard’s Fine Coffees at the Library.  Join us on the last Tuesday of each month (September through April) at 6:30 p.m. for this family event.  A poetry selection book is provided for participants that do not bring their own original poem to read. 

Pre-school Story Hour is held on Tuesday & Wednesday mornings at 10 am from September through April. Story hour consists of reading stories, puppet shows, and sing-a-longs.

Saturday Afternoon Movies.  Enjoy free movies provided the second and fourth Saturday of the month in the Library’s movie theater at 2 p.m.  Movie titles are geared towards a family audience with a variety of G, PG and sometimes PG-13 ratings.  Refreshments are available for a small charge.

Summer Reading Program is a State Library of Florida sponsored program. This program is conducted throughout the summertime for children of all ages. Activities include: puppet shows, performers, storytellers,  reading logs and arts and crafts.
